A person who studies dinosaurs and fossils is called Paleontologist.

Description

what do you call a person who studies dinosaurs, a person who studies dinosaurs and fossilsA person who studies dinosaurs and fossils is called Paleontologist. A paleontologist maintains fossil (bones) records to study life that exists in the past. With the help of fossils records,  a paleontologist creates theories about the Earth’s history. Some think that a paleontologist is somewhat related to an archaeologist, since both dig up and study old objects, but a paleontologist is interested in studying ancient life forms whereas, an archaeologist is interested in studying ancient man made structures. However, it can be said that a paleontologist lies between a biologist and a geologist.

Paleontologist is a scientist who study life of prehistoric life forms with the help of animal and plant fossils. A paleontologist is concerned with all the branches of biology of prehistoric life: their form and composition, evolutionary patterns, relationships with each other and with modern species, geographic division, and associations with the environment.

Example

  1. The Hollywood movie Jurassic Park has brought the role of a paleontologist to public attention.
  2. paleontologist studies millions of years old objects.
  3. What do you call a person who studies dinosaurs and fossils?
  4. A person who studies dinosaurs and fossils is called paleontologist.

Synonyms

  • Paleologist
    • A person who specializes in Paleology, the study of antiquities. A paleologist primarily studies the man made ancient objects which is very different than the study of dinosaurs and fossils.
  • Prehistorian
    • A person who specializes in events happened in the prehistoric era of human civilization is called prehistorian. A prehistorian studies the events that happened in the prehistoric era of human race, which is again in contrast to the study of dinosaurs and fossils which mostly happened way before the existence of human race.

Details of Paleontology

The study of dinosaurs and their fossils is old. Though Paleontology became established as a separate area of study in early part of  the 19th century, yet one can find various scholars throughout the known history of mankind who studied the area and made certain theories about the life before their times. The Greek philosopher Xenophanes (570–480 BC) discovered and studied marine fossil on some land areas to conclude that some land areas were once under water. The great Persian scholar of Islamic golden age, Avicenna and eleventh century Chinese scholar Shen Ko also studied fossils. In his late 18th century work Georges Cuvier discussed about the extinct species showing that various fossil do not match with any of the living organisms, thereby establishing Paleontology as a separate area of study. The growth in the area of Paleontology, gave way to the further growth of Geology, and all the Biological sciences. The growth of these areas were also influenced by the interest in the exploration of the fossil fuel. The development of the area of Paleontology also helped to understand the process of evolution and mass extinctions. It helps us to live in the present and shape up our future.
