The Unenlightened Era

During 1600s, aesthetics were given more significance than the construction and functions of a ship. Completely ignoring, important characteristics such as stability and hull proportion of a ship. The early designs were prepared without geometry and line traces; in fact the drawings looked more like those of luxurious houses with decorations and designs elaboration.
Pierre Bouguer, a French astronomer who was the man behind ship building actually never built a ship, was thought to begin naval architecture. In 1735, French Navy and science communities sent a voyage to Peru to confirm the true shape of Earth. Before that it wasn’t reveled that the earth is round. On this 10-year voyage Pieree Bouguer and his teammates measured the length of degree of latitude from equator to the top of Andes. During this expedition, Pieree Bouguer wrote Traite du navire, which is believed to be the first book and the keystone of naval architecture.

Discovering and taking over new places was the prime motive of each and every nation. The use of science in ship building became widespread and propagated across major ship building nations of Spain, Britain, Italy and France. Suddenly, Marine Architecture became the most required field. It saw an unexpected influx of people, from carpenters to privileged members of scientific communities who sought to learn the formulas of ship building and became part of this industry.

Down Fall and Shift

By the end of  1700s the revolution of Naval Architecture came rolling down. The research and training centers were almost shut down by the French revolution and the Napoleonic war. This unfortunate and unexpected u-turn wasn’t the end of shipping industry but became a footstep to the new era of naval architecture. Britain, which was not involved in the development of ship industry, all of a sudden found itself in power. With new technologies and knowledge of ship design, Britain became the unquestionable naval power. After the second world war, the focus of the ship building industry shifted, with South Korea being the largest ship manufacturing country in the world.
